History Tour & Michelangelo’s David
This tour is a walk through the streets of Florence and a discover of the secrets of Michelangelo's marble giant, David.
With our guides you will visit the highlights of Florence like the Piazza della Signoria (Signoria Square), the political city centre with the Medieval huge Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace), the magnificent Fontana del Nettuno (Neptune Fountain), the scary statue of Perseo (Perseus) under the Loggia della Signoria (Signoria Porch) and the replica of David close to the main door of the Old Palace. In 1504 the original David was placed here and it became the symbol of Florence’s virtues and cultural life. In few steps we will reach Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge), the oldest bridge of Florence: on the either sides of this bridge we can admire shining windows of goldsmiths and silversmiths and the incredible Vasari Corridor, private street made for the Medici Family in the 16th century. Then we will stop in front of Mercato del Porcellino (The Piggy market), the famous Florentine leather market. Under this beautiful porch, built in the 16th century, you can find the most famous good luck of Florence!!
Our exploration will continue in Piazza della Repubblica (Republic Square), the ancient Roman forum, then the Old Market and now the “salotto buono” of Florence. Then we will stop in the Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square) . Here we will see the place for which David was originally commissioned, the workshops (now are rooms of the Museum of Opera del Duomo) in which it was carved by Michelangelo and we will admire the ancient Battistero (Baptistery), the Campanile di Giotto (Giotto’s Bell Tower) and the big Cupola (Brunelleschi Dome).
Now our trip will go to the Galleria dell’Accademia (Academy Gallery) where is housed the real David.
Here we will skip the line and, after the first room dedicated to Renaissance painting, we will be in front of the stunning David!
Our guides will answer all your questions about this incredible masterpiece, they will reveal the hidden aspects of this statue and they will talk about the life of the young Michelangelo in Florence.
In the Academy Gallery are housed other statues made by Michelangelo, like the Pietà, the San Matteo (Saint Matthew) and four unfinished Prigioni (Prisoners), made for the funeral monument of the Pope Giulius II
